Online Auction Announcement

Eaton Conservation District-Michigan Arbor Day Alliance is pleased to announce the launch of an online auction.  Auction funds will support conservation programs in Eaton County as well as, the Michigan Arbor Day Alliance program.  Due to the extreme funding situation of the State of Michigan, all funding has been cut to Conservation Districts.  The funds raised by the auction will allow Eaton Conservation District to offset this funding situation and continue providing programs for the residents of Eaton County.  Eaton Conservation District has provided residents with wildlife and forestry workshops, a photo contest, river restoration, habitat management, agricultural technical assistance and much more.

Michigan Arbor Day Alliance program is a statewide environmental education initiative housed by Eaton Conservation District.  The program focuses on the importance of trees and their role in community health and well-being.  Auction funds will allow the Michigan Arbor Day Alliance program to grow by sponsoring Project Learning Tree Workshops (environmental education curriculum for K-12 educators), plant trees, free education materials and much more!

Michigan Arbor Day Alliance would like to thank Michigan State Federal Credit Union for committing to tree planting in Michigan!

Together Michigan Arbor Day Alliance and Michigan State Federal Credit Union planted 69 trees in the Greater Lansing Area.

Trees were planted in the City of East Lansing, Delta Center Elementary and the City of Grand Ledge.

Over a 50-year lifetime, a tree generates $31,250 worth of oxygen, provides $62,000 worth of air pollution control, recycles $37,500 worth of water, and controls $31,250 worth of soil erosion.  Studies have shown that trees enhance community economic stability by attracting businesses and tourists people linger and shop longer along tree-lined streets, apartments and offices in wooded areas rent more quickly and have higher occupancy rates, and businesses leasing office spaces in developments with trees find their workers are more productive and absenteeism is reduced.  These are just a few of the benefits trees provide to communities.

In the future Michigan Arbor Day Alliance hopes to continue its tree planting efforts!

Green tip of the month:

In California alone, roughly 5 million elementary age students will hand out 5 million glossy and glittery valentines to their classmates.

That's a lot of love, but it's also a lot of paper. Here are a few greener ways for young Kevin to tell young Jane that he thinks she's neat. Keep in mind that your child probably has between twenty and thirty classmates, so the secret is to make it simple.

  • Homemade baked treats are fun, inexpensive and widely appreciated. And no trees are harmed in the process.
  • For take-home valentines, look for printed cardstock you already have lying around at home, like poker decks or baseball cards, that can be reinvented with a little effort. Type up a simple greeting, like "Thanks for being a great friend! Happy Valentine's Day." Copy and paste it thirty times, print it up on a single sheet and cut the printout into fortune cookie size slips of paper. The greeting can then pasted onto a Queen of Hearts or below the grinning image of an unsung sports hero for a funky and original way to express appreciation. Have your child pass them out to his or her friends.
  • If a bit of time is on your side, spend a messy evening making homemade paper with the kids (for a recipe for plantable paper, see www.thriftyfun.com). Use a heart-shaped mold and all the kids will have to do when it's dry is fill out "to's" and "from's." Beautiful.
